Increasing public understanding and knowledge of the restored home of Thomas Worthington

Mission

While stewardship for Adena rests with the Ohio Historical Society, its historical value and natural beauty are particularly important to area residents. The Friends of Adena Mansion & Gardens will work in cooperation with OHS to increase public understanding and knowledge of Adena, act as a liaison between the site and local community, conduct and provide volunteer support for site programs, projects and special events, advocate the site's needs to government officials and develop and implement fundraising programs for the site.

About the estate

Adena was the home of Thomas Worthington and is an important historic asset to Ohio and all Ohioans. Thomas Worthington was Ohio's first U.S. senator, sixth governor and is known as the "Father of Ohio Statehood." His beautiful home in Chillicothe, finished in 1807, is a premier example of the Georgian style of architecture. The estate grounds, reflecting gardening practices of the era, are enhanced by formal gardens, vegetable gardens and a fruit orchard; the view from the summit overlooks Mt. Logan, the inspiration for the Great Seal of Ohio.
